CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS!!

Businesses have long sought to distract and attract the attention of potential customers that live in a world of ever-increasing commercial bombardment.
Through this post i would like to throw some light on how the increasing number of endorsements throw a valid question to the consumers. Is there a science behind the choice of these endorsers or is it just by the popularity measurement? What are the reasons which lead to impact of celebrity endorsement on brands?

We all know that Celebrity endorsements are impelled by virtue of the following motives:
  • Instant Brand Awareness and Recall.
  • Celebrity values define, and refresh the brand image.
  • Celebrities add new dimensions to the brand image.
  • Instant credibility or aspiration PR coverage.
  • Convincing clients.

Now, One of the valid questions is how compatible is the celebrity's personality with the overall Brand image?

It’s a well known fact that a celebrity is used to impart credibility and aspirational values to a brand, but the celebrity needs to match the product.

I would like to give you some examples of how marketers have not kept the above points in mind, which has adversely effected the image of the brand as well as the celebrities.

1.LOSS OF CREDIBILITY FACTOR

BIPASHA BASU first promoted HUL’s shampoo brand – Clinic All clear and then jumped to promote it’s rival P&G’s brand Panteen.

2.  PRODUCT CELERITY MISMATCH

Many see Amitabh Bachchan as a materialistic and overexposed actor who is not ready to sit on his laurels but works relentlessly to build a larger-than-life media image never seen or heard before in Bollywood.
Amitabh is endorsing everything - from pens to cars to hair oils to chocolates to paints.
Multi brand endorsements by the same celebrity would lead to overexposure: The novelty of a celebrity endorsement gets diluted if he does too many advertisements. This may be termed as commoditisation of celebrities, who are willing to endorse anything for big bucks.

Now can you connect Amitabh Bachan to a product like NEROLAC PAINTS Or NAVRATNA OIL or JUST DIAL for that matter???

The point I want to put across is People don't buy Nerolac Paints only because it is endorsed by Amitabh Bachan..

Another example Sachin Tendulkar endorsing brands like CASTROL , UJALA!!

IT WAS FINE TILL HE ENDORSED SUNFEAST, BOOST, VISA, MRF AND BRITANNIA BUT FOR HEAVEN SAKE INDIA'S GREATEST CRICKETER ENDORSING A STAIN REMOVER DETERGENT????

Yet another example : MADHURI DIXIT ENDORSING A DISH WASHING LIQUID

TILL SHE ENDORSED COMFORT IT WAS FINE BUT THIS IS SOMETHING REALLY NOT EXPECTED FROM A STAR LIKE HER!! No doubt  Madhuri looked young and charming, but acting like a kamwali bai in an add?
There are at least two key dissonances here :
  • That MADHURI is endorsing a dish washing liquid - not something a star of her level generally does.
  • That MADHURI plays a kaamwali bai - in other words, a Maid - a significant fall in status, especially to help sell something.
All the three celebs I mentioned above are my favorites. They are people who have inspired me and whom I adore and look up to.
But just to be in the limelight or to jump to the endorsement bandwagon how far is it justified and wise to do ads which do are inappropriate to their personalities..??

Also another important thing is does celebrity endorsement create a positive  impact on the brand image?
I learnt from my professor that in a survey conducted in a remote area, to compare the two brands, "FAIR AND LOVELY"  & "FAIR EVER", the interesting result found was as under;
An ordinary girl with wheatish/ dark complexion does not connect herself with the brand "FAIR EVER"  or the celebrity endorsing the brand only because she feels "FAIR EVER" is only for a gal as beautiful and far as the celeb endorsing it, i.e. Asin
She could connect herself more with  "FAIR AND LOVELY" as it is not endorsed by any beautiful or glamorous celeb,

The fact to be emphasized is that celebrities alone do not guarantee success, as consumers nowadays understand advertising. They know what advertising is and how it works. People realize that celebrities are being paid a lot of money for endorsements and this knowledge makes them cynical about celebrity endorsements.

Congratulations!!!!!!!
Agree with your points regarding Loss of credibility factor...
But as far as Madhuri Dixit, Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachan Sir are concerned, I have some other opinion.
Branding Analysts have not taken Sonam Kapoor as maid but Madhuri Dixit as they feel she can connect with those people. Like everyone says Amitabh Bachan connects with common people like no one else. We must not forget that majority of Indian market is in rural India. People there just remember those brands which are being promoted by their icons.

@suvidhi : Firstly, M glad u raised this point.

I don't really agree with you on ur point of 'connect with the common man' , n the reasons r simple :
Stars like Amitabh and Sachin are worshipped by entire nation. People, not only in India but across the globe have a very strong connect with them. moreover, Amitabh already has connected with common man with the help of KBC and not to forget his joining of "POLIO ERADICATION CAMPAIGN". And about taking Madhuri as a maid for promoting a dish washing liquid is again not acceptable! not only for a star of her cadre bt for others as well!!

Ads like Coca cola by Amir Khan and IDEA by Abhishek Bachan are decent and valid when we Talk about "connect with a common man" and this is bcos ppl can connect the brand/product wit the celebrity!!

I really appreciate the fact that Kareena declined to promote any brand like MC D or KFC bcos she preaches vegetarianism!

And common lets be practical, Do you think ppl in rural or semi-urban areas will buy Navratna Oil or any such pdt, jus bcos celebrity lik BIG B promotes it??

No!!!! they consider cost factor primarily. They will prefer any other brand of oil over Navratna if that is going to be cheaper than Navratna.

@komal
firstly navratna oil -
*leader in ayurvedic cool oil segment
*3rd largest hair oil brand in india
*endorsed by amitabh bachan and shahrukh khan at national level
*suriya in TN.
*chiranjeevi and mahesh babu in andhra pradesh
*sourav ganguly in west bengal and Govinda.
so i guess poeple do buy it be it in rural india or urban india with its tag line thanda thanda cool cool being household vocabulary.
Being endorsed by such celebs, I hope you will agree that it adds to cost burden and comparatively it is bound be costliest, yet it notches highest sales figure in terms of ayurvedic hair oil. with 49% market share. There 45% of revenue from navratna oil is from rural india with it being hit in the states of andhra pradesh, UP, Bihar and Maharashtra.

Boroplus antiseptic - again endorsed by Bachan Sir and kareena kapoor enjoys 75% market share. Both retained as brand ambassadors.

Navratna Talc - Again SRK national ambassador with Suriya in TN and junior NTR in AP. Growing product and registered a growth of 105%

Fair and handsome - again SRK and again market leader.

Dabangg - malaikka - zandu balm - 42% market share.

Now on second front, you mentioned that you appreciate the fact that kareena refused to promote KFC and MCD, then you also appreciate the fact that Sachin Tendulkar refused to endorse Kingfisher being alcohol brand purely because he thinks people look at him as idol and it would be very inappropriate of him to endorse alcohol.

Further in your comment you are yourself agreeing to my point that GOI has chosen BIG B for polio campaign. It itself states the mass appeal and the selling power of the man. I was having a chat with my mom, and she said that how in earlier times particularly in villages elders didn't allow or didn't let these people to vaccine and govt took this path of involving celebs so that people don't act as hinder.

So i guess i made my point.
